GIS and the Web
Brian Parr, GIS Manager, MARC

Brian gave an overview of what GIS (Geographic Information Systems) can do and gave the basic definition that it’s “map meets database.” Tools used to maintain and analyze GIS data at MARC include ARCMap, ARCView and ARCServer. The biggest cost of GIS is actually for data management.

Brian walked us through several examples of GIS on the Web:

AIMS
Dan Steen, Johnson County GIS

Johnson County has more than 200 data sets in their collection. The most expensive part of their operation is capturing and maintaining the data.
The next wave of GIS web applications will involve Web 2.0 technology, APIs and mashups.
Dan spoke about REST (query strings and JavaScript), geoprocessing tools and web mapping services.

SQL Server 2008 will have more options for queries that may make GIS and mapping easier.
Dan walked us through several maps and projects they are working on:
