Emergency Web Site Backups
Rich Lovett briefly mentioned that after the tragedy in New York/Washington, several messages sent via the PTI
listserv mentioned the need for cities to have backup versions of their Web sites. A good idea is to partner with
another city to back up each other. If anyone is interested in pursuing this as a MAGWeb group, we can look into
it. E-mail Rich Lovett at rich_lovett@kcmo.org if you'd be interested.
Web Content Management Software
Rich Perkins (perkinsrl@bvsg.com) and Duane
Downtain (downtaindc@bvsg.com) of BV Solutions Group were our guest speakers. They explained Web content management
and demonstrated the software, Documentum.
Content can be anything.
With the content management method currently used by many organizations, information and pages are bottlenecked
at the Webmaster.
With a Web Content Management (WCM) system, content is generated once and can be reused several times in many different
formats. The content contributor doesn't use or need to know any HTML or Web editing software.
Using a WCM system makes the time to Web faster, and developers can use whatever tools they would prefer. Can also
assist in management and measurement of site usability, make site more dynamic with user logins, and tailor the
content with meta tags to specific customers.
These systems also reduce the cost of ownership of an IT system and require lower levels of training, reducing
costs.
To use the system for workflow, pages need to be divided into content and design. The design portion is a template
for all the XML files that will hold content.
Documentum has an "edition" capability for you to see old versions of the Web site in snapshots, for
before and after comparison.
Oracle is the background database and should have its own server. It also maintains the metadata and user ID information.
Hardware: you can do it on a single server if it is a workhorse, but it is best to have two.
Documentum costs about $75,000 for 100 seats, licensing and training, etc. It is toward the top of the scale pricewise
and is at the top for functionality.
For a list of Web content management companies, see BV Solutions Group's PowerPoint presentation (422Kb).
MAGWeb site
If you have any suggestions for or can help maintain the MAGWeb
group site, please contact Rich Lovett, KCMO. We can also share documents via the site; send him your RFPs, policies,
ADA stuff, links, etc.
Use the listserv for questions and to share ideas!!!! E-mail mailto:webmasters@lyris.marc.org
Next Meeting: Digital Signatures/PKI
Our next meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the
MARC offices. Karen West from Digital Signature Trust (DST) will be our guest speaker to talk about digital signatures
and public key infrastructure (PKI).
In November, Dan Davis of Jackson Co. will bring in a guest speaker to talk about Microsoft .Net.
If you have any ideas for future topics or guest speakers, please share them with Rich Lovett, KCMO, (rich_lovett@kcmo.org) or Susan Waters, Overland Park (sjwaters@opkansas.org).
