Please feel free to invite some of your
colleagues from your or another city/county if you think it would benefit them
to be part of our group!
Web site issues
roundtable
I apologize for not taking many notes at this meeting. There were some issues
that were brought up. I'm looking for a solution to linking from a PDF to another
PDFon the Web, without it appending to the back of the first PDFwhen a user
clicks through.
Some of us are also looking at how to create "Print this page" buttons that eliminate some of the graphics, formatting etc. If you have any suggestions, please send them over the listserv.
We did a fun experiment with www.webpagesthatsuck.com. They have a feature called "Two Minute Offense" where you have two minutes to type in all of your design comments for the "sucky" site they've provided. You then get the opportunity to compare your comments to those of Vince Flanders, web guru.
Book
suggestions
"Homepage Usability" -- Jacob Nielson
"Don't Make Me Think" -- Steve Krug
Roman Madrigal from the Shawnee Police Dept. requested comments for a community site he has been working on (www.hoacpa.org).
Atabong F. from the Johnson
Co. Library showed us how he has developed some content management tools for
the librarians there. They are also working on a redesign.
November Meeting: Usability Tips
For November, our guest speaker from September, Diana Persell, director of creative
services from National Information Consortium, has graciously agreed to return
to give us some guidance on usability and answer questions about how to improve
the usability of our Web sites. The
meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the MARC offices, 600
Broadway. Some folks
usually do lunch after the meeting. Let us know if you'd like to join us.
If you have any ideas for future topics or guest speakers, please share them with Susan Waters, Overland Park (sjwaters@opkansas.org) or send them via the listserv.
