Discussion Topics
Content Management System (CMS) -- Brett
Williamson
Brett suggested two ideas on how to assist smaller populated and
budgeted towns and cities with web presence utilizing generic open source templates.
Idea #1: Create a list of cities and towns MAGWeb could represent -- a suggested “membership drive” project with the objective in bringing in new members by assisting in generating new sites for those areas with little to no web development.
Idea #2: Create a site for smaller governments with lower populations and lower budgets that would give them a basic amount or web presence. This site would use a content management system that some MAGWeb member jurisdictions might want to adopt later.
The group expanded on these ideas:
- Possibly design and/or host sites.
- Maybe look for models already doing same thing.
- Maybe advertise on-site to generate money to cover cost.
- Create a conference to bring together content management providers and small governments to meet and go over the services available and the needs of the smaller government.
- Seek funding for assisting/funding the project(s) via MARC.
- Utilize MARC for possible web management.
- Possible first steps discussed: Go over open source CMS’s we could use.
- She thought it had great potential
- MARC could help without a doubt
- Grant assistance should be sought
- MARC can make contact with governments
- Seeking web reps to come to next meeting
- Possible cost involved for the assisted governments: URL purchase and hosting costs
Chair for this project selected: Brett Williamson.
Project subcommittees needed: to be selected next meeting as well as inviting some MARC representatives to attend our December meeting.
National Assn. of Government Webmasters (NAGW) Update -- Rich Lovett
- New NAGW chair announced: Chris Audano
- Board member Rich Lovett will resign at end of 2006
- Conference finance numbers given.
- Membership: currently 154 paid members at $75 a year.
- New NAGW listserv: 186 of 475 have moved to the Google Groups listserv from the Irving, TX, listserv.
- 2007 NAGW conference will be in Valley Forge, PA.
- 2008 NAGW conference might be in Chicago, Ill.
Suggestion: add NAGW URL to MAGWeb site. Rich will do this.
MAGWeb elections -- Positions: President & Secretary
Placed
on hold until December meeting. It was suggested to conduct the elections on-line.
Review needed and to see who is eligible to vote in election.
It was suggested by Randy Ellis to move the December meeting up one week because our normal meeting falls on Dec. 21, which is close to the holiday season.
